For UK buyers choosing a vintage CHANEL jacket, it helps to separate the decision into four parts: the garment’s measurements, the available seam allowance, the area to be changed and the right place to ask.

Start CHANEL jacket alterations with measurements, not the size tag
Even in CHANEL size 38, shoulders may be compact, the body roomy or the waist sharply shaped. Fit also depends on shoulder and bust width, sleeve width, armhole and length.

The fit of the same size 38 can change with the design.

Measure your own jacket and the listed garment at the same points.
Requested change
Be specific about which area should change and by how many centimetres.
Is a 4 cm jacket-bust difference large? It is “1 cm × 4 points”
We once received a question from a customer whose previous jacket was size 40 and whose new choice was size 36: “The garment measurements do not look very different, but will it still be too small?”
If the full bust circumference of two jackets differs by 4 cm, dividing that difference across the front, back, left and right gives 1 cm × 4 points.
The entire 4 cm does not appear in a single place. At each point the difference is only 1 cm, so it can feel smaller than the number first suggests.
Shoulders, armholes and the design still affect comfort. The safest comparison is to measure a jacket you own at exactly the same points shown on the product page.
For CHANEL alterations, where the seam allowance sits matters more than its total width
Letting out the body depends on side or back seams; sleeve width on sleeve seams; and waist changes on the jacket line. What matters is whether fabric remains where needed, not only the total seam allowance.
What TC JAPAN may be able to check
On request, we can inspect visible seam allowances and seam lines without damaging the garment. We may not be able to confirm them accurately when the lining must be opened, or when a heavy coat, velvet, interfacing or the inner construction is complex.
Making a CHANEL jacket larger is different from making it smaller
Making it smaller
Excess fabric is taken in. The original silhouette can still change unless the shoulders, sleeves, pockets, braid trim and hem chain are considered together.
Making it larger
The inner seam allowance is used. The alteration is impossible if fabric does not remain where it is needed, and a previous fold line or colour difference may become visible when fabric is released.
A label difference of “two sizes” or “three sizes” is not enough to decide.
Ask an alterations specialist to inspect the actual garment and specify how many centimetres must change at the bust, waist, sleeves or shoulders.
A CHANEL boutique and a local alterations specialist serve different purposes
CHANEL’s official “CHANEL & moi” information describes care, adjustments and alterations for ready-to-wear while remaining faithful to the original design. Replacing a part with a preferred alternative or changing white lace to black lace is closer to redesign than repair.

Unlike a boutique focused on preserving the original design, a skilled tailor or department-store alterations service may be more flexible about requests that move the garment closer to your personal taste, even when some design details change.

A request we actually received
A customer asked to return a garment after a boutique would not change its white lace to black. “The boutique can examine it” and “the boutique will redesign it exactly as requested” do not mean the same thing.

Can CHANEL ready-to-wear repairs be requested online?
Online repair programmes and eligible product categories can differ by market.
For a ready-to-wear alteration or repair, confirm the process with a CHANEL boutique or Client Care in United Kingdom before sending the garment.
An authentic CHANEL item may still be declined for boutique repair
What one boutique visit revealed
A returning customer told us that a jacket previously purchased online was taken to a boutique for a size alteration, where the customer then learnt that it was not authentic.
However, a declined repair alone does not prove that an item is counterfeit.
Labels and acceptance criteria
International customers often worry about brand, size and composition labels. Acceptance criteria can depend on the country, boutique and requested work, so describe the label condition and required repair directly to the boutique you plan to visit.
Vintage components
Whether matching buttons, tweed or lining are still available must be assessed individually. Even an authentic item may be difficult to repair faithfully when the same components no longer remain.

Current cost and timing are quoted after the condition of the item and the required work have been checked.
Before buying an item or bringing it in, prepare the following information:
- The garment measurements and the measurements of a jacket you own
- Whether the shoulders, bust, sleeves, waist or length should change
- How many centimetres should be let out or taken in
- Any visible seam allowance and the condition of the brand, size and composition labels
- Photographs showing the whole garment and the area to be altered
After finding a design you love, check its measurements and seam allowance, then ask a trusted specialist. This reduces the risk of learning after purchase that it cannot be altered as expected.
