CHANEL labels, buttons, linings, hem chains and construction differ by period and model. Sophisticated counterfeits may copy logos and numbers, so no single feature can prove that a garment is authentic or fake.

Documented examples of fake CHANEL clothing
Examine the combination, not one isolated detail.
Even authentic garments differ by model in product number, colour number, brand label, buttons, lining and construction. A neat logo does not prove authenticity, and a slight letter shift does not by itself prove a fake.

Why labels, hem chains, linings and buttons cannot be judged alone
All five labels below are from authentic garments checked by TC JAPAN. Some authentic examples do not have a notably short middle bar, so this detail alone is not decisive.
A brand or care label may be removed to avoid skin irritation. On reversible garments, an authentic label may be inside a pocket or moved to a less visible position. A fake label may also be added later. TC JAPAN states when a label has been removed; a label moved to another position is not treated as missing.
Some authentic pieces were made without one. A Spring 2011 jacket checked by TC JAPAN originally had no chain, avoiding extra backward pull on its longer rear hem.
Counterfeits have used camellia-pattern lining on models whose authentic specification used a different lining.
Fake buttons have been fitted to authentic jackets. Buttons must be compared with those used on the specific model.
Older collections can be copied when demand remains high or returns after celebrity wear. In 2026, TC JAPAN also confirmed counterfeits imitating pieces from the 1990s.
Many current counterfeits are priced like ordinary pre-owned CHANEL rather than as obvious inexpensive fakes. Price is not proof.
Price, sales venue and feedback count cannot guarantee the authenticity of one garment. Counterfeits may move from sites that supply them into auctions and person-to-person marketplaces.
Can a highly rated seller still be mistaken?
There are cases in which a highly rated seller offered a counterfeit without knowing it. TC JAPAN works with major reuse shops and is sometimes asked to inspect a garment that passed another screening but still raised concern.
Reputable sellers and major reuse shops try to assess authenticity, but older models may lack sufficient reference data. When a difference can be documented, some sellers have accepted a return even after payment. The seller may also be a victim; present the comparison material and check the return conditions before negotiating.
What to check before buying CHANEL clothing
Beautiful photographs do not guarantee the condition of the garment delivered.
TC JAPAN product photographs have repeatedly been copied after removing our logo and reused in listings on Japanese and overseas sites. A copied photograph cannot show crushed tweed texture, loss of shape or surface wear on the garment that will actually arrive.
Before purchase, request photographs of the actual garment: full front and back, labels, number and material tags, buttons, lining, cuffs and hem.

A sophisticated counterfeit may reveal loss of shape, wear, pilling or weak fabric only after use. If discovered after the return period, resale or trade-in may be refused.
CHANEL’s official FAQ states that it does not authenticate products or issue authenticity certificates. Acceptance or refusal of a repair cannot be treated as an official authentication result.

A number alone is not enough.
We check whether the combination of product, colour and material numbers exists for that model. Logo lines, typefaces, spacing and print position can vary by model, even within the same period.
We also compare buttons, lining, construction, cuffs and hem with records of the same authentic model.
