Three CHANEL 09A jacket lengths and a layered black palette

Black moves from matte wool to satin shine, sheer cloth and beadwork, so the palette changes as the models walk. Jackets appeared in three lengths, with ottoman-braid edging, paper-like tweeds and streamlined men’s trousers.

Hats by Maison Michel, the CHANEL hatmaking atelier completed coat dresses, suits and evening looks made with guipure, jet-black beads, satin leather, silk jersey and crêpe.

Jade works because it is scarce.

It appears in Art Deco-style pendants and heel rings, while pale pink briefly interrupts the black. Each small accent makes the surrounding dark surface look more deliberate.

Why CHANEL called 09A ‘Belle Brummell’

The name is a feminine play on Beau Brummell, the English dandy associated with disciplined dark dress and close attention to ties, scarves, collars and cuffs. Lagerfeld translated those menswear codes into CHANEL womenswear.

At the Grand Palais in March 2009, black dresses and suits moved between an onyx-like floor and eight white rooms. White ruffles kept the strict tailoring from looking severe.
