Coco Chanel and Ballet: Le Train Bleu, CHANEL Jackets & Dresses | HK

A CHANEL jacket changes the moment its wearer begins to move. The shoulder softens, the chain gives the hem a gentle rhythm, and a dress comes alive with each step.

In the artistic world of 1920s Paris, Gabrielle Chanel knew Sergei Diaghilev of the Ballets Russes and later supported his work.

Coco Chanel and dance |

Chanel did not want clothes to hold a woman still. Jersey, an easier shoulder and lighter construction allowed jackets and dresses to move with the body while keeping their clean line.

She had also studied dance, so she understood elegance as movement rather than a single pose. The official CHANEL film below captures that idea with remarkable clarity.

Le Train Bleu, 1924 | CHANEL

Le Train Bleu premiered in Paris on 20 June 1924 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Jean Cocteau wrote the libretto, Darius Milhaud composed the music, Bronislava Nijinska choreographed, and Gabrielle Chanel created the costumes.

Rather than traditional tutus, the dancers wore relaxed clothes inspired by seaside sportswear.

Chanel brought freedom of movement to the stage.

From Le Train Bleu to CHANEL 2007PF | Karl Lagerfeld’s new chapter

Eighty-three years later, Karl Lagerfeld revisited the ballet in CHANEL 2007PF Paris–Monte Carlo. Satin, tulle, ribbons, jackets and dresses moved easily from Riviera daylight to evening glamour.

The rhythm inside CHANEL jackets and dresses/

A precise jacket can still feel effortless when there is space for the body to move. A skirt sways, a chain marks the hem, and accessories add a quiet beat—

Le Train Bleu was one evening on stage, but its spirit continued. Coco Chanel’s idea of freedom moved through Karl Lagerfeld’s work and still lives inside CHANEL today.
