CHANEL 12PF Paris–Bombay begins with a useful contradiction: Karl Lagerfeld had not been to India, yet produced one of his richest Métiers d’Art collections around an imagined version of it.

The point was fantasy, not reportage. Indian dress and jewellery references were disciplined by Paris tailoring, an ivory-and-black palette and the precise handwork of CHANEL’s specialist ateliers.

A Parisian India that never existed

Lagerfeld spoke of an India shaped by the idea of the country. Gabrielle Chanel’s own love of Indian jewellery deepened the link, but the finished clothes remain unmistakably CHANEL.

Nehru collars and sari-like drapes meet linear jackets; Mughal-style flowers appear beside chains of pearls. The tension between abundance and control gives the collection its modernity.

Tweed, brocade and atelier detail

The detail film gives the fastest overview of the accessories and surface work, from stacked jewellery to bags and elaborate headpieces.

The making-of film then reveals the process. Lesage builds embroidery from thread and beads; Desrues turns buttons and ornaments into jewellery-like punctuation. Brocade, duchesse satin and metallic lace add further depth.

How the Grand Palais set the mood

The Grand Palais was arranged around a long feast of fruit, flowers, sweets and candles. A miniature train delivered drinks around the table, adding wit to the splendour.

In the full-show film, the important detail is movement: lamé glints, silk falls cleanly and embroidered tweed holds its shape.

The most convincing contemporary styling is edited rather than maximal. An ivory jacket over black, a metallic tweed suit with restrained accessories, or one pink draped skirt against a plain top is enough.
