Karl Lagerfeld’s CHANEL 2003 Fall/Winter collection—03A—has lost none of its appeal. Its collarless jackets are particularly useful: clean at the neckline, precise in shape and easy to layer without making an outfit feel overworked.

Fur edging, metallic tweed, velvet, sequins and a rare leather-like cotton finish add richness. The collection is polished, but its practicality is just as persuasive as its appearance.

CHANEL 03A: Graphic Tailoring Balanced by Texture

Compact jackets and short A-line skirts gave the CHANEL suit a leaner proportion for 2003 Fall/Winter. Black and white formed the graphic base, interrupted by purple tweed, pale colour, tulle and soft, tactile trims.

Leather leg warmers introduced a biker edge, while white boots pushed the styling towards a space-age mood. Snaps, hooks and zips added an unexpectedly functional note to the refined tailoring.

A CHANEL 03A Collarless Jacket Is Made for Layering

Why the Fur on CHANEL 03A Feels Different from Recent Work

Fur appears at collars and edges on a number of 03A jackets. From 15 years of handling CHANEL clothing at TC JAPAN, the conclusion is clear: this period’s fur is of a completely different quality from that used in recent years.

Its fullness gives depth to the silhouette, while the cut keeps the effect controlled. The fur supports the tailoring instead of disguising it.

Not Leather: CHANEL 03A’s Croc-Embossed Glazed Cotton

A particularly unusual 03A jacket resembles worn crocodile leather, but the fabric is a croc-embossed cotton blend that has been treated and glazed. It achieves the character of leather without being leather at all.

The practical advantage is considerable: storage is less demanding, and a rainy day does not require the same caution as genuine leather.

The result is a polished leather look worn with the ease of a celebrity carrying a Birkin without ceremony.

This treatment is exceptionally rare for a CHANEL jacket, and we have not seen a comparable piece after 2003. For the right size, it is a compelling find.
