Have you ever looked at a CHANEL campaign and wondered why a particular image stays in your mind?
From BLACKPINK JENNIE’s Coco Neige campaign to CHANEL fashion imagery and films, many of those memorable works were created by Inez & Vinoodh.
Their pictures do more than present a beautiful model. The texture of tweed, the shape of a jacket and even a glance remain vivid. After years of looking closely at CHANEL clothing, we still find ourselves wanting to follow their work.

Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin met in Amsterdam and have worked together since 1986.
From VOGUE editorials to campaigns for major fashion houses, you may already know their images even if you did not know their names.
They embraced digital techniques early, creating fashion photographs that are beautiful yet slightly uncanny. For CHANEL, their work spans ready-to-wear, bags, Coco Neige and collection films.
Before reading a long explanation, begin with one film.
“A Cinematic Story” for CHANEL Fall–Winter 2024/25 ready-to-wear has quiet tension, striking faces and clothing that seems to flow through the frame. It feels more like a short film than a conventional fashion campaign.
In motion, their world feels much closer than it does in a single campaign photograph.
Black, white, JENNIE and CHANEL. The combination is already powerful, yet Inez & Vinoodh give it another atmosphere.
There are knitted hats, bags and plenty of camellias, but the result never feels overly sweet.
Even with sporty pieces layered together, the face remains clear. It is a beautiful reference for styling a white camellia with black clothing.
The appeal of Inez & Vinoodh cannot be understood through still images alone.
Their films with Margaret Qualley and Rianne Van Rompaey feel like brief scenes from a movie: the distance between two people, the moment one turns, and a hem moving with every step.
Rather than simply showing a garment from the front, they make sleeves, hems and jewellery part of the scene. CHANEL with a small story inside.
Then the mood changes to forceful monochrome.
Without colour, the weave of tweed, the outline of a black jacket, and the light on a white collar or accessory become even clearer.
Each photograph carries a slight tension, and black CHANEL looks exceptionally sharp. Personally, this clean style with a little edge is especially appealing.
From sharp monochrome, the scene shifts to a softer world of light and colour.
Seen one after another, the atmosphere changes so completely that it is hard to believe the same duo made them. Yet the person and the clothing never lose their presence.
Tweed, one of the house’s signatures, was the focus of CHANEL Fall–Winter 2022/23 ready-to-wear.
The campaign photographed by Inez & Vinoodh features Rianne Van Rompaey and presents the same tweed through two opposing worlds.
One is a richly coloured garden wrapped in nature and mist. The other is a monochrome studio stripped of decoration.
In the garden, tweed appears soft and dreamlike. In monochrome, its form and outline become precise. Light and background give the same clothing a completely different expression.
A tweed jacket behaves in the same way. In bright light, coloured yarns and metallic threads emerge; against black, the outline and buttons become stronger. It is worth remembering when looking at product photographs.
This work was photographed in Gabrielle Chanel’s apartment on Rue Cambon in Paris.
Mirrors, chandeliers and objects fill the decorative room, yet neither the person nor the clothing disappears into the background. Everything belongs to one CHANEL world.
Then comes a jacket with extraordinary volume.
A piece so strong that we might normally wonder where to wear it looks entirely natural in the photograph. With powerful clothing, it can be better not to make yourself smaller. Confidence can make both the wearer and the garment more compelling.
Looking through the work of Inez & Vinoodh can expand the way we enjoy CHANEL clothing.
Add light around the face with a white collar or camellia when wearing a black jacket. Do not hide a voluminous piece; wear it confidently. Even several accessories need not feel overly sweet when the overall colour palette remains controlled.
CHANEL jackets and dresses can look completely different on a hanger and on a person.
Colour combinations, the number of accessories and even the way someone stands. Seen through a photographer’s eye, choosing a single piece becomes interesting in a new way.
