For US collectors, CHANEL 12PF Paris–Bombay is a vivid example of how Karl Lagerfeld turned a destination into an atelier-made fantasy—without pretending to recreate it literally.
He had never visited India. Instead, he worked from the idea of India and from Gabrielle Chanel’s fascination with Indian jewellery, filtering both through Paris tailoring, tweed and pearls.
・Why Lagerfeld’s imagined India matters
・A banquet inside the Grand Palais
The result was not travelogue fashion. Mughal-like florals, salwar and kameez shapes, draped dupattas, sari references and Nehru collars were recut into the language of CHANEL.
Black and ivory keep the richness controlled. Metallic thread and layered pearls then create the change in scale that makes the collection so rewarding to examine in person or on detailed product footage.
The December 2011 presentation surrounded a banquet table piled with fruit, flowers, desserts and candles. A tiny drinks train circled the setting—a playful mechanical detail inside an otherwise opulent scene.
Watch the full show first for silhouette and movement: pearl-bound tweed, ivory silk and gold-and-silver surfaces behave differently once the models walk.
CHANEL’s atelier film makes the construction legible. At Lesage, embroidery is assembled from thread, beads and reflective pieces; at Desrues, buttons and ornaments become miniature objects in their own right.
The close-up film is especially useful for comparing the runway impression with the actual components: brocade, lamé, duchesse satin, jewellery, bags and elaborate headpieces.
A single 12PF element is enough. Pair an embroidered jacket with plain black trousers, let an ivory blazer lift a dark dress, or use denim to make metallic tweed feel less formal.

The collection’s greatest luxury is not sheer volume of decoration, but the way every surface changes as the viewer comes closer.
