Guide for Taiwan Customers
When you are considering a small alteration for a CHANEL jacket, dress, or other piece of clothing, it is best to check a few important points before purchasing.
The key points are the current measurements, seam allowance, tags, fabric, and the condition of the garment.
CHANEL clothing can fit very differently depending on the collection year, design, fabric, and cut, even when the size label looks the same. That is why it is safer to think about possible alterations before purchasing, rather than deciding after the item arrives.
This page explains what to check before considering alterations for a CHANEL jacket, dress, coat, or suit.
Rare CHANEL jackets and dresses do not always appear in the exact design and size you are looking for.
Some customers who are used to alterations first find the design they love, then check the measurements and seam allowance before deciding whether to purchase.
They may then take that information to a trusted alteration specialist and ask whether the item is likely to be adjustable.
This is a very practical order. It is safer to check what can be checked in advance, rather than buying first and finding out later that the alteration is not realistic.
CHANEL clothing can be difficult to judge by the size label alone.
Even when two pieces are both labeled CHANEL size 38, one may have narrow shoulders, another may have a roomier body, another may have a strongly shaped waist, and another may be made from thick tweed with very little flexibility.
For jackets in particular, the balance of the shoulders, bust, sleeve width, armholes, and length can change the overall fit.
Before thinking about alterations, measure a jacket you already own flat and compare it with the measurements shown on the product page.
How to measure your own jacket and compare it with CHANEL measurements
When considering alterations for a CHANEL jacket, seam allowance is one of the most common points to check.
However, seam allowance is not only about how many centimeters are available.
If you want to let out the body, the side seams or back seams may matter. If you want to adjust the sleeve width, the sleeve seams matter. If you want to shape the waist, the position of the seams and the original line of the jacket become important.
In other words, the important point is not only how much seam allowance exists, but also where it exists and how it is constructed.
At TC JAPAN, when requested, we check the seam allowance and seam structure as much as we can. However, we do not force open or stress the garment in a way that may damage it.
We are sometimes asked whether a CHANEL jacket can be made two sizes larger or three sizes smaller.
This cannot be judged by the number alone.
The difficulty changes depending on whether you want to let out the body, take in the waist, narrow the sleeves, or adjust the shoulder area.
The lining, hem chain, buttons, pockets, braid, and tweed pattern matching may also affect the alteration.
Even when a CHANEL jacket looks simple from the outside, the inside construction can be very delicate. That is why the final decision should be made by an alteration specialist who can inspect the actual garment.
Even when both are called size alterations, making a garment smaller and making it larger are very different.
Making a jacket smaller means taking in extra fabric. However, if too much is taken in, the balance of the shoulders and sleeves may change, and the original silhouette may be affected.
Making a jacket larger means using the seam allowance inside the garment. If there is not enough seam allowance, it may be difficult to let the garment out.
Also, when fabric that was hidden inside is brought to the outside, fold marks or color differences may appear. This is especially important with vintage CHANEL pieces or dark tweed fabrics.
Some CHANEL pieces are difficult to check from the inside, including thick coats, velvet garments, jackets with firm interlining, and pieces with complicated lining construction.
Forcing the lining open or pulling the fabric too strongly may damage the garment or the stitching.
For this reason, when we cannot confirm the seam allowance safely, we may clearly say that we do not know.
It is better to separate what can be confirmed from what cannot be confirmed, rather than giving an unclear answer.
If you are considering a CHANEL piece with alterations in mind, there are several points to check before purchasing.
Having this information makes it easier to discuss the item with an alteration specialist.
Rather than saying that something feels a little small or somewhat large, comparing actual measurements gives a much clearer starting point.
CHANEL boutique repairs tend to focus on preserving the original design of the brand.
On the other hand, local alteration specialists or department store alteration services may be easier to consult when you want the garment adjusted to your own body.
If you are not trying to dramatically change the original design, but simply want to improve the fit, adjust the waist, or shorten the sleeves, a non-boutique alteration specialist may sometimes be more suitable.
However, skill levels vary. Before leaving an important CHANEL jacket with an alteration specialist for the first time, it is safer to check their workmanship with another garment first.
When consulting an alteration specialist, it helps to prepare product photos, garment measurements, seam allowance information, and measurements from your own clothing.
It is also important to explain exactly which part you want to alter.
For example, do you want the whole garment to be smaller, only the waist taken in, or the sleeves made slightly narrower? The more specific your request is, the easier it is for the specialist to give a realistic opinion.
This page focuses on measurements, seam allowance, tags, and alteration specialists when considering size adjustments before purchasing.
