This is a story I heard from one of our customers who enjoys and
frequently participates in Yahoo Auctions.
"Ugh, I hate Yahoo Auctions!
I can never buy anything!"
Upon further inquiry, they shared an interesting story.
A Chanel jacket they wanted was listed with a 1-yen starting bid,
so they fought hard, rubbing their sleepy eyes, bidding until just before the end.
Then, right before the bids closed, all bidders were suddenly canceled,
and the auction ended with no bidders!
That's what happened!
I was surprised to hear this, but it seems to be a common occurrence on Yahoo Auctions,
and judging by Yahoo Auction reviews, opinions are divided.
"Seller is not at fault" camp
・It's not a violation of Yahoo Auctions rules.
・When to end is up to the seller.
・If you don't like it, don't participate.
"Seller is at fault" camp
・Don't waste people's time.
・I wish they would set a minimum bid price from the start.
・It's a cheap trick to increase the number of bids.
So, it seems opinions are
divided into these two camps.
Here are some opinions from Yahoo Chiebukuro
Perhaps the sellers are in a dilemma:
"I want to increase the number of bidders and get attention,"
but on the other hand,
"I'd be in trouble if it ended too cheaply."
This might be why they cancel right before the end.
From our perspective, when it comes to this,
our regular customers come to mind.
I can't help but wonder if they would be surprised
by a sudden bid cancellation after all their hard work bidding.
As for our company's stance,
we would have strong moral reservations about canceling bids right before the end.
However, sellers who don't have repeat customers might be quite unconcerned.
Perhaps they are sellers who don't particularly consider the buyers.
Given that some of them are corporations with properly listed antique dealer licenses,
I am honestly surprised.
In any case,
since it's a place where many people gather,
it might be less stressful and less frustrating to participate with a flexible mindset,
thinking of it as "just how things are." 😊
Happy bidding
