The season was framed by “Coco took it from the boys.” It returned to a central CHANEL idea: taking practical menswear elements and giving them a different life in a woman’s wardrobe.

Gabrielle Chanel had already worked with jersey, cardigans, sportswear and tailoring from the 1920s, and her time in Britain brought her close to men’s tweeds and sporting clothes.

The “One Way Street” set was a real-looking strip of asphalt. Brown suits and newsboy caps opened the show, with male models walking among the women.

A man in a braid-trimmed cardigan jacket made the message clear: tweed, braid and cardigan shapes could remain recognisably CHANEL without being treated as women-only codes.

Bold checks, grid-pattern coats, boxy cardigans, biker jackets and sporty sweaters gave the tweed several different moods.
