The 2.55 was created by Gabrielle Chanel in 1955. Its shoulder chain gave the wearer something very practical for the period: both hands remained free.
Quilting, chains and flaps later became so closely connected with the House that they now work like a visual family resemblance. A bag can become slouchier or larger and still read as CHANEL when several of those details remain.
What that means in plain English
The new bag does not need to look exactly like a Classic Flap. Familiar materials and details are enough to connect it to the same design history.
CHANEL 25: a more relaxed way to carry the codes
The CHANEL 25 combines quilted leather, a leather-woven chain, the double C and two front pockets with a rounded hobo silhouette.
A Classic Flap tends to look polished and composed. The CHANEL 25 is meant to look softer on the shoulder, with a shape that changes slightly as it is filled.
CHANEL currently shows Mini, Small, Medium and Large versions. Its campaign pairs Margot Robbie and Kylie Minogue, with Michel Gondry directing Minogue again 25 years after Come Into My World.
It is fair to call the CHANEL 25 an important current design. It is too early to call it the next permanent classic.
Why Classic Flap prices attract so much attention in the U.S.
Reuters reported, citing UBS research, that the price of a classic quilted CHANEL flap bag more than tripled between 2015 and 2024.
For U.S. shoppers who remember earlier boutique prices, that change can make any older black flap seem automatically valuable. The market does not work that neatly.
Size, leather, hardware color, year, edge wear, structure, lining, restoration and accessories all affect the price of a pre-owned bag. A high asking price on a marketplace is not the same as a completed sale.
A better U.S. price check
Compare current USD listings for the same model and size, then narrow the comparison to bags with similar condition and restoration history.
Lambskin care and storage
CHANEL advises against overfilling, prolonged light and humidity, and direct contact between wrapped chains and the leather during storage. If a bag becomes wet, the area should be dried carefully with an absorbent, non-pilling cloth.
Lambskin receives minimal treatment so its natural softness remains. That helps explain both its smooth, luxurious feel and its greater sensitivity to friction, fingernail marks and color transfer.
When reviewing a pre-owned lambskin bag, condition photographs are therefore more useful than broad descriptions such as “excellent.”
What to check before buying a pre-owned bag online
- Measurements: confirm width, height, depth and strap drop in the seller's measurements; size names are not enough.
- High-wear areas: enlarge the corners, base, underside of the flap, chain channels and interior.
- Leather: distinguish lambskin from grained calfskin before deciding how much visible wear is acceptable to you.
- Alteration or refinishing: check whether the color or surface has been restored.
- Purchase terms: read what happens if the received item materially differs from the description.
Price news can explain why the market is paying attention. It cannot decide whether one bag is right for you. That decision still belongs to the bag's shape, condition, measurements and actual USD price.
