CHANEL 2012 Cruise (12C) belongs to a very specific stretch of the French Riviera. Karl Lagerfeld staged the show at Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap d’Antibes, near Cannes, just before sunset on 9 May 2011.
Rather than treating the Riviera as one generic resort, 12C layers several worlds together: Antibes and nearby Cannes, Old-Hollywood memory, international society, beach dressing, sharp tailoring and high jewellery.
CHANEL 12C on the French Riviera|Antibes, Cannes and the Coast【2012 Cruise】
Fifty models walked while guests watched from blue deck chairs beneath white parasols; Bryan Ferry performed after the show. Contemporary reporting could describe the trip through Cannes even though the actual venue was in Antibes.
The distinction makes the setting more interesting, not less. 12C reads as a Riviera collection with a precise address and a much wider cultural horizon.
Rita Hayworth & Aly Khan|A Riviera Story Already Written into the Hotel
Lagerfeld drew on Rita Hayworth and Aly Khan. Aly Khan, a prince of the Aga Khan family, married Hayworth in 1949; the hotel records that the pair met there that year before marrying.
That history gives the polished mood a human reference. Narrow jackets, kick-pleat skirts, yellow and lilac, wide trousers and light dresses feel closer to a travelled wardrobe than a themed costume.
CHANEL 12C High Jewellery|When Pearls Meet Narrow Tailoring
Ninety CHANEL Haute Joaillerie pieces brought real diamonds and pearls onto the runway. Karolina Kurkova’s Comète diamond piece curved around the upper arm, adding light while the garment underneath stayed clean.
It is a useful styling lesson from the Karl Lagerfeld era: luxury can increase while the silhouette becomes simpler.
The jewellery travels; the line stays precise.
That balance is what lets 12C move between resort, city and evening dressing.
The Tale of a Fairy|A Film Made Alongside the Collection
Karl Lagerfeld conceived, wrote and directed The Tale of a Fairy for 12C, with Anna Mouglalis, Amanda Harlech, Kristen McMenamy and Freja Beha Erichsen among the cast.
The film gives the collection a second context beyond the runway. Clothes move through rooms and conversations, making the Cruise wardrobe feel inhabited rather than displayed.
A Cruise Wardrobe That Moves from Day to Night
The show covers swimwear, fitted jackets, palazzo trousers, midi dresses and beaded white evening looks. That breadth is exactly what makes a Cruise collection useful for international travel: one season, several degrees of formality.
The four current pieces below narrow the idea down to wearable tweed and knitwear without losing the colour-and-detail story.
